DeWaste Dobbs Community Kick-Off
2/4/23
HUGE TURNOUT FOR DeWASTE DOBBS TRASH MONSTER KICKOFF
An estimated 150 people braved icy temps to be a part of the DeWaste Dobbs Kickoff event on Saturday afternoon, February 4, at the Dobbs Ferry Public Library.
Every inch of the Library’s Community Room was abuzz with creative energy, as attendees built Trash Monsters from clean household refuse (sparing it from the garbage can!), tossed fruit rinds through a hoop into a compost bin, leafed through books at a book swap, played the Speed Sort game, and munched on apples and bananas with the folks from Dobbs’ own Mom’s Organic Market.
The event brought together a multigenerational cross-section of village residents; elected officials on the Village, County, and State level; student volunteers from both Dobbs Ferry and Masters schools; and local businesses, including Mom's and Hudson Compost.
Mayor Rossillo was joined by NY State Senate Majority Leader Andrea Stewart-Cousins, NY State Assemblymember MaryJane Shimsky, and Westchester County Executive George Latimer in kicking off the year-long DeWaste Dobbs campaign, intended to encourage Village residents to think more carefully about household waste. In 2021, Dobbs Ferrians produced nearly 10 million pounds of trash. Believing we can and must do better, DeWaste Dobbs, a project of Sustainable Dobbs’ Zero Waste Committee, is urging residents to sign the 0.6 lbs Pledge to be more mindful about creating waste -- https://www.sustainabledobbs.com/the-dewaste-dobbs-pledge
To help build momentum for the campaign, the people at Hudson Compost have generously offered $50 of free curb-side compost pickup to the first 100 new Dobbs Ferry residents who sign up -- https://www.hudsoncompost.com/
The giant Trash Monster created at the event is on display now in the Library’s vestibule, where it will remain for the next year. Visitors are welcome to come by and add more trash any time.
