As part of the responsibility of Sustainable Dobbs' newly-formed Climate Smart Communities Task Force, a Climate Action Progress Report will be generated annually to track the initiatives undertaken by the Village every year and to document the Village’s achievements, challenges, and goals for its residents. This being the first-ever report, it also seeks to provide a historical record by highlighting the progress that the Village has made not only in 2023, but in previous years as well.

2023 Climate Action Progress Report

In 2023, the Village of Dobbs Ferry took part in a program through the NY state DEC that provides a robust framework to guide the actions local governments can take to reduce GHG emissions and adapt to the effects of climate change. The first step in this process is to perform a GHG Inventory for all buildings, vehicles and operations controlled by the local government. Using data from 2019, this GHG inventory provides a baseline for which Dobbs Ferry can set emissions and operation costs reduction goals, determine ways in which those goals can be reached, and track progress.

Government Operations GHG Inventory

In 2023, the Village of Dobbs Ferry developed a Community GHG Inventory, which identifies and quantifies the sources of GHG emissions from community activities and establishes a baseline from which future emissions reductions and progress can be measured.

This report is the culmination of research to shed light on the waste and recycling chain in Dobbs Ferry, with the goal of better understanding the lifecycle of the materials we put in our recycling bins. It was prepared with the cooperation of the Westchester County Department of Environmental Facilities and the Dobbs Ferry Department of Public Works. Read the Report Here

Hazard mitigation is an action to help reduce long-term risks caused by hazards or disasters, such as flooding, earthquakes, or wildfires. The purpose of hazard mitigation is to protect people and structures, and minimize the costs of disaster response and recovery.

Westchester County is currently updating our county-wide Hazard Mitigation Plan and has developed a website dedicated to this process, linked here.

Love ’em and Leave ’em is an initiative of Westchester County to reduce organic yard waste. Mulching in place is a time-tested method of turning old leaves into new soil. There are many benefits for homeowners, including a greener lawn and healthier soil, as well as benefits for the town and county, including “reduction in County yard waste tipping fees, labor overtime, fuel, and transportation costs, specialized equipment purchase and maintenance, prevention of storm drain clogging, etc.”

See more benefits of mulching-in-place on LELE’s Homeowners page.

Westchester County Food Waste Study: Report & Initiatives In 2018 the County moved forward with a Study to preliminarily assess key factors that impact the overall feasibility of a food waste diversion program and recycling facilities within the County. Here is a link to the report prepared by Woodard & Curran, issued in March 2018.
