Safe Routes
We want to help make Dobbs Ferry a more walkable, bikeable Village, and we are working on several initiatives to get us there:
SAFER STREETS: There is currently a 12-month campaign underway in Dobbs Ferry to improve the safety of roadways in Dobbs Ferry for pedestrians and cyclists. The effort is a collaboration between multiple groups in Dobbs Ferry including the Village Traffic Committee, the Village Sustainability Task Force and the PTSA Safe Routes Committee, as well as the Dobbs Ferry School District.
The groups working on this initiative have succeeded in establishing a school speed zone at the middle and high school. Information about the safest routes for walking and riding to school have also been distributed to school families and members of the community. See below for the rundown.
ROUTE 9 CORRIDOR: We are working with broader regional actors to improve cycling and pedestrian corridors along Broadway/Route 9 throughout the Rivertowns.
MORE SIDEWALKS: We want to make it easier for pedestrians to stroll through our Village safely.
If you want to contribute to any of these efforts, please get in touch!
Safer streets
Did you know that in a 40 MPH collision, 90% of pedestrians die while in a 20 MPH collision 90% survive? Slow down, Dobbs Ferry! We want to make our streets safer for all. Four of our children were hit by cars in 2017 alone.
The following are the major focus areas of the Safe Routes campaign:
School Speed Zone
Distraction (driving and walking/cycling)
Crosswalk Safety (drivers and pedestrians)
The Effect of Speeding on Pedestrian Collision Survival
New Drivers

More sidewalks
Among other transportation projects highlighted in our Village’s Climate Action Plan, we want to inventory our community’s sidewalks, crosswalks and trails to create a comprehensive active transportation network, while also coming up with a plan for the construction and improvement of our sidewalk network. We can’t do this without the help of volunteers, so if you want to get involved, get in touch!
Route 9
Dobbs Ferry residents and officials have been working with partners in four other Rivertowns communities (Sleepy Hollow, Tarrytown, Irvington and Hastings) to come up with a plan to create a Route 9 that is safer and more-accessible for all users - walkers, bikers, and drivers alike. The project was a community driven effort that included multiple public forums and input from residents, community leaders and transportation experts over a two-year period. The Final Report with recommendations was issued in November 2018. Check it out here.
Implementation and support for the recommendations in this plan will depend on engaged community members. If you want to get involved, get in touch!
