Trees are Life
Art and Word contest in honor of Arbor Day
On April 26th, the Dobbs Ferry Sustainability Task Force together with the Library and the Tree Consortium hosted an art and word contest for Middle and High School students in honor of Arbor Day. We received more than two dozen entrants from all schools in Dobbs Ferry: Dobbs Ferry Middle and High School, the Masters School, Children’s Village and the Clark Academy, plus a few from outside contest criteria whom we could not include for the official contest, but who nevertheless contributed worthy work. Thank you for the wonderful submissions.
We celebrated with an opening reception, and the community voted throughout the month of May. The winners will be displayed on Dobbs Ferry’s very own reusable bag which will be given away to Dobbs Ferry residents thanks to our sponsors: Compass Realty, Paul Bunyan Tree Service and DeSouza landscaping.
Thanks to all who participated! Please enjoy the gallery of works.
The winners are:
Art: Violette Terjanian, Dobbs Ferry High School
Word: Noah Whitney, The Masters School
Taking action
Among other initiatives, the consortium is working on:
Obtaining Tree City USA designation for the Village
Working with tree specialist Wayne Cahilly to learn how to better protect our trees
Coordinating with the Village administration and the Parks department on future tree plantings
Coming up with local policy options that prioritize tree plantings in the development of public spaces and during the land use approval process
Caring for our Trees
In January 2019, Dobbs Ferry’s tree consortium held an informational session at Village Hall highlighting the findings of professional arborist Wayne Cahilly. He outlined the challenges for trees in Dobbs Ferry in terms of care and maintenance, and some important changes that need to be made to keep our Village green and healthy:.
